University of Otago postgraduate students Holly Still and Taylor Hamlin have gained two of Antarctica New Zealand’s four national doctoral scholarships this year, to support Antarctic research.

Ms Still, a geology student, was "really excited" to gain the $20,000 funding, spread over two years.

She will study the flow behaviour of ice near the Priestley Glacier, and her research aims to contribute to improved projections of rates of ice-sheet change in response to climate warming.

Mr Hamlin, a student in zoology and mathematics and statistics, said the funding would provide more "peace of mind" in undertaking his research, also backed by Landcare Research, which focuses on the feeding habits of Adelie penguins at Cape Bird, including by tagging adult birds.
