Caution urged as motorway opens

Dunedin's key northern route has now re-opened but motorists are urged to take care as the aftermath of an overnight storm plays havoc with southern highways.

The Northern Motorway between Dunedin and Waitati was closed to all traffic at 7.30am after earlier being closed to heavy vehicles when six trucks became stuck about 6.45am.

It reopened at 9.30am with cautions in place.

Police are urging to motorists to take care.

"The message is be mindful of the conditions as you don't know what's round the next corner," Senior Sergeant Mel Aitken said.

Cautions are in place on SH93 between Clinton and Mataura, SH85 from Palmerston to Kyeburn, SH8 between Raes Junction and Milton, SH1 from Waihola to  Gore and SH90 from Raes Junction to the SH1 intersection.
