From next Monday, Dunedin motorists will no longer be able to turn right from Mornington Rd into Caversham Valley Rd, as the Lookout Point bridge project nears completion.
And the New Zealand Transport Agency is advising motorists that from Monday they will also be unable to make a right turn from Caversham Valley Rd into Mornington Rd.
NZTA project manager Simon Underwood said both these turns, including heading south from Mornington Rd, had been potentially dangerous, and these traffic hazards had been the main reason for building the traffic bridge.
This work is part of an about $44 million, two-stage project to develop a wider, smoother approach through Dunedin's southern gateway.
As part of the bridge-related development, further work was being done on median areas, and a traffic island requiring a left turn only was being developed at the end of Mornington Rd, Mr Underwood said.
A right-turning section in Caversham Valley Rd, where vehicles could wait before turning into Mornington Rd, was also being removed.
Fire Service appliances from the Lookout Point Fire Station, using lights and siren, would still be able to make an emergency right turn from Mornington Rd into Caversham Valley Rd, he said.
A graphic issued by NZTA summarises recent traffic turning changes near Lookout Point, pointing out that only a left turn from Caversham Valley Rd was possible now at the intersection with Riselaw Rd; with only left turns possible at the South Rd-Caversham Valley Rd intersection.
And South Rd and Riselaw Rd no longer intersected.
NZTA organisers said that only the removal of the two right turning options involving Mornington Rd would take effect for the first time on Monday. The other left-turn requirements at Lookout Point had already been in place for some time.
