Queen's Birthday weekend will be ideal for "sitting in front of a fire with a good book", a MetService spokesman says.
The low cloud and drizzle affecting Otago during the past few days is expected to clear a little today, and the sun may peek through the clouds from time to time.
But meteorologist Angus Hines said the sunshine was not expected to last, and urged Otago residents to make the most of it.
He said cloud would return this evening, and tomorrow a southerly front would roll up the South Island, bringing strong winds and a brief period of rain.
"From then on, the temperatures are going to drop behind that southerly into the following few days.
"So by Sunday and Monday, things might be feeling a little chilly, actually."
He said there was no snow forecast for coastal Otago, but some might fall at higher levels inland.
While the weather was forecast to start clearing again early on Monday and bring some sunshine, it would still be very cold, he said.
"Saturday afternoon, Sunday and Monday — you’ll be better off inside, I think.
"It may warm up a little more on Tuesday, but we’re into winter now, so it’s not going to warm up too much."
An Air New Zealand spokeswoman said fog had disrupted many flights in and out of Auckland yesterday, but it did not affect Dunedin Airport like it did on Wednesday.
She said there were no cancellations or significant delays to services in or out of Dunedin yesterday.
