A Scottish comedian travelled from the lowlands to cheer on The Highlanders in Dunedin.

Comedian Bruce Fummey, of Blackford near Perth, has returned to Dunedin Fringe Festival for the third time to perform in two shows.

He kept returning to the festival because it coincides with the Super Rugby season and he could watch his beloved Highlanders play.

He had watched them play three times in New Zealand including the latest game against The Crusaders, a rivalry he loved to hate.

''It feels like a Scottish-English game - you know what I mean? - you've got this Scottish town and you've got this English town come down and you want to give them a hiding - don't you?''

He planned to watch the Black Caps play at University Oval today.

''I'm going to a cricket match for the first time in my life - I'm Scottish, we don't care about cricket but I'll see what this cricket thing is about and why you care about it.''

The first run of his two shows began last night with Best of Scottish Comedy III at Fortune Theatre.

The show would be third time he had performed at the festival with fellow Scottish comedian Vladimir McTavish.

Then for two nights from next Friday was his solo show A History of Scotland: The Rise of the Ginga.

''I tell the whole story of how Scotland developed - it's Dunedin history as well because your history is our history ... it's history through the medium of knob jokes.''

The show was originally titled The Rise of the Ranga because he was misinformed red-headed New Zealanders were commonly nicknamed Ranga.

Anyone in the audience was "fair game'' including redheads, he said.

''If I don't say something that offends somebody then I'll be disappointed.''

See how easy it is to call the Highlanders by their proper title, not that idiotic and childish name Landers keep it up ODT.
