Shirley McMillan says she is a late bloomer when it comes to swimming.

The 86-year-old learnt to swim only when she was in her 40s and loves it so much, she has since spent an hour nearly every day doing laps at either the St Clair Hot Salt Water Pool or Moana Pool.

"It's one of the easiest ways to keep fit when you're older.

"I've been coming here for years - so many, I've lost count.

"When I'm not here, I feel like a fish out of water. I love it.

"It's wonderful here. The atmosphere is beautiful and the water is just like stepping into a warm bath. It's lovely.''

Mrs McMillan was one of about 20 people making the most of the pool yesterday, before it was officially closed for the winter season.

The Port Chalmers Pool and the Mosgiel Pool also closed for the season yesterday.

The Mosgiel Pool is expected to reopen on September 1, and the St Clair and Port Chalmers Pools are expected to reopen at the end of September/early October.
