Controlled burn near Port tomorrow

A controlled house burn will be conducted by the Fire Service near Port Chalmers tomorrow.

Firefighters from Port Chalmers, Waitati and Dunedin brigades along with a rural tanker will attend the controlled burn at a Heyward Point Rd property between 9am and 4pm.

Port Chalmers Chief Fire Officer Stephen Hill said the property was down a private leg-in section.

The public was likely to notice the burn from Purakaunui Rd.

''It is very good of the owners to let us do this sort of training.

''You can't do this sort of thing in the middle of town and this won't cause anyone any nuisance.''

A controlled burn provided a training opportunity for crews to work in a ''live'' fire environment where they could practise skills, both firefighting and command and control, under realistic conditions.
