Couple turn back clock to mark 60th

Recreating their special day was an "incredible" way to mark 60 years of marriage for a Dunedin couple.

Ronald, 82, and Dorothy Askin (nee Reid), 81, were joined by most of their bridal party to recreate a special photo from their wedding day.

Mr Askin said it was remarkable to be able to go back to where he and his wife were married at Glenfalloch with the people who were there on that day.

The only person missing from the photo was best man Vic Reid, who had since died.

On the day he first laid eyes on his wife, he had volunteered to take his aunt to church and all he really wanted do to was take his aunt’s 1957 Morris Minor 1000 for a spin, Mr Askin said.

However, it was lucky he went because he ended up spotting his wife in the crowded church.

"I saw a whole row of girls and I thought ‘that one’s nice’," Mr Askin said.

Mrs Askin said she thought Mr Askin was all right too.

His aunt was coincidentally invited back to his wife’s house by her mother for a cup of tea and he went along as well, Mr Askin said.

After that afternoon, he was always at his wife’s house and about a year later they were married at Glenfalloch.

The two phrases that were most important for a successful marriage were "I love you" and "yes dear", Mr Askin said.

Mrs Askin said the couple worked well together because her husband liked to do the talking and that was handy for her.

Both of them had gone through some health issues recently and it was good for them to have each other’s support, she said.

The couple have three children, 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
