A Dunedin man has described the fearful moment he rushed his young family inside after seeing a man carrying what appeared to be a gun striding up a quiet suburban street.

Moments earlier the North East Valley resident had heard two men shouting at each other, but thought nothing more of it.

It was not until he was driving down Craigleith St the situation became serious.

"I could see someone walking up the middle of the street about 100m in front of me, so immediately it felt weird, then as I got closer I saw what looked like a pistol in his hand."

The man said he immediately reversed back up the street and told his wife and young children to get inside the house.

He then saw about five men, one with a baseball bat, fighting in the middle of the street.

The gun was not used, he said.

The men left before police arrived.

A police spokeswoman said a witness reported seeing a man carrying what may possibly have been a firearm.

Police were seen searching through a car parked on the street and talking to witnesses.

As of last night no arrests had been made, the spokeswoman said.

No gun had been found, she said.
