Further parking changes likely

More parking changes are on the way as the Dunedin City Council seeks to address problem areas around the city.

A report to today's full council meeting lists a series of minor changes in the central city and outlying suburbs, although it is not clear whether more parks will be lost than created.

The list was the work of the council's traffic and parking bylaw committee, which met on August 29 to consider "changes and clarifications'' to parking.

As a result, councillors would today be asked to sign off on 47 changes across the city.

The changes included mainly minor tweaks, such as converting old bus stops - now deemed surplus to requirements - to parking, or changes to no-stopping lines.

In Water St, that would include switching two P120 parking spaces on the south side, near Vogel St, to electric vehicle charging only spaces, with a P60 time limit.

The changes were to accommodate a licence granted to ChargeNet NZ, which planned to install electric vehicle charging units in the area, a report by DCC regulatory management team leader Tami Sargeant said.

A handful of car parks would also be lost when existing bus stops were relocated and extended in Forresbank Ave and Chapman St, and when parking and a bus stop were swapped to improve visibility at the Ravensbourne Rd/Wanaka St intersection.

Elsewhere, parks would be added as redundant bus stops were removed, including at Belgrave Cres and in Dundas St, while shorter "authorised vehicle only'' spaces would also create space for more parks, including in Vogel St.

Five new P30s would also be added, in Andersons Bay Rd and Kaikorai Valley Rd, while four P5s outside Kaikorai Primary School would be changed to pick-up/drop-off only between 8.30am-9.30am and 2.45pm-3.15pm.

Dunedin: city of extortionate parking fees.

Maybe Genter sent a letter to our council like she did to Wellington...

Dunedin is the only city on the face of the earth with an economy based upon parking. If you want to get rich here buy a piece of property and turn it into a parking lot. Funny how our rates continue to go up to pay for infrastructure and other items like parking meters so DCC can screw us a second time with exorbitant fees when we use them. People need to revolt and shop online. I bet DCC and the mayor dont have to pay for parking...shop online folks!
