Work at ‘two cars slip’ to begin next week

Work to repair the most significant slip caused by last June’s flood is to start next week, after the Dunedin City Council awarded a $570,000 tender.

The council said yesterday that work on the slip near the intersection of Highcliff Rd and Seal Point Rd, known as the "two cars slip", was expected to be completed by mid-December.

Council group manager transport Richard Saunders said the repairs would take longer than initially hoped, as the site required complex geotechnical analysis and the importance of finding right design to address the ground conditions.

Extra time also had to be built in to account for the availability of expert subcontractors.

"We’re looking forward to completing this repair work for the Peninsula community and visitors, and we’re grateful for the community’s patience with the process," he said.

Throughout most of the project, the road would remain open as a single lane, as it is now, but the contractor would need to close the road for one week in early November to deliver, drill and place the steel pipes for the retaining wall.

The first phase of the project involved site preparation and testing, which the contractor expected to complete during next month.

The contractor would drill and install test anchors to test the strength of the rock under the ground and determine the specifications for the retaining wall’s anchors.

Once the testing phase was finished, the contractor would move off-site for a month until the drilling contractor was available, and then work would start on the permanent installation of the anchors, in late October.

Clearwaters Otago Ltd was awarded the tender.
