Deadline creeps upon pitch-invading geese

They've had another week in the blissful Port Chalmers surroundings and yesterday afternoon the eight geese were still fouling Watson Park, despite the threat of death hanging over their heads.

Chalmers community board chairman Steve Walker had not heard from the volunteers tasked with catching the birds but said they needed to be gone as soon as possible.

"I think the common sense here in the Port Chalmers area is that the geese need to be removed.''

The group of volunteers - opposed to the Dunedin City Council's solution of shooting them - were originally given until last Sunday to remove them to a Taieri farm.

The goodwill group has asked the council not to disclose members' names to media.

Council parks and recreation group manager Richard Saunders said yesterday the council had had no update from the volunteers about proceedings but they "had until next week'' to get rid of the geese.
