Two diggers work to cap an underground fire at the Nash and Ross landfill at Burnside in Dunedin this morning.

Some Green Island residents were advised at 4am to close windows as the toxic smoke from the fire drifted through the suburb.

However, Fire and Emergency said it's now under control and the threat to residents has subsided, RNZ reported.

The fire began on Saturday.
