The Department of Conservation is refusing to comment on the number of submissions it has received as it attempts to slash $8 million and more than 50 jobs from its operations.

In the face of a forecast budget deficit of $8 million, a Doc draft report recommends culling 56 jobs, including 30 jobs from the Wellington head office and 26 jobs from regional offices.

The report has recommended two jobs be cut from the Otago conservancy, four from Southland, two from Canterbury and two from the West Coast.

Doc spokeswoman Fiona Morris said the strategy and budget alignment review was an internal operational manner and "there is no further comment at this stage".

However, the Otago Daily Times understands Doc had received 280 submissions from staff by the review's consultation closing period on Monday.

Over the next two weeks, a Doc review team will analyse the submissions before reaching a final decision by May 23, with staff told whether they will lose their jobs on Monday, May 26.

Implementation of the review is expected to begin on June 3.

Conservation Minister Steve Chadwick said Doc's review was an operational matter for the director-general and the changes in the draft report were only proposals.

In addition to culling 56 jobs, the report recommends relocating the Wellington-based Kakapo Recovery Team to Invercargill.

Rising costs, such as ACC levies, compliance costs, firefighting costs and salary bill led to the review, which began on February 25.
