Santa swapped his reindeer for a pack of canine companions as part of an event at Dunedin’s Forrester Park yesterday.

The Otago Canine Training Club’s Christmas event Jingle Paws gave dogs the chance to meet the man himself, as well as take part in competitions.

Husky Dude was among the pets dressed for the occasion in a Santa hat.

Owner Sarah Campbell said the event was a good opportunity to see lots of different animals and watch some dog sport demonstrations.

"Its about encouraging people to get out with their dogs", she said.

She had taken a club’s training course twice because it had been so good, and it had paid off.

Dexter’s spins, rolls and other moves earned him the award for best trick.

Jingle Paws co-organiser Marjo Buis said it was the first time the event had been held by the club.

"It’s like a Christmas do, but open to the public", she said.

They wanted to show potential new members it was a fun place to come.

The event had been put together with a zero-dollar budget, and they had raised funds with raffles.

Items had been donated by multiple businesses, and there were plenty of prizes even for those that did not take a top spot — everyone would leave with something, she said.
