Ahead of one of his birthdays, George Haggie invited his good friend to dine with him.

"It was September 5. That can’t be — that’s mine," was her initial reaction, Elisabeth Haggie said.

Mrs Haggie said she did not initially reveal that only two years separated them, because Mr Haggie had commented she was, of course, much younger than him.

The Brighton couple have been married about 30 years.

They met during a tramp Mr Haggie led in the Maungatua Ranges.

Both had previously been married.

He has seven children and she has three.

Between them, they have 24 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Mr Haggie said he no longer went for tramps but still liked to go for walks.

Mrs Haggie said the pair had a lovely meal and dessert with family at the Mosgiel RSA and Mr Haggie said it was a "very good place for a do".

Our journalists are your neighbours

We are the South's eyes and ears in crucial council meetings, at court hearings, on the sidelines of sporting events and on the frontline of breaking news.

As our region faces uncharted waters in the wake of a global pandemic, Otago Daily Times continues to bring you local stories that matter.

We employ local journalists and photographers to tell your stories, as other outlets cut local coverage in favour of stories told out of Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.

You can help us continue to bring you local news you can trust by becoming a supporter.
