"It was September 5. That can’t be — that’s mine," was her initial reaction, Elisabeth Haggie said.
Mrs Haggie said she did not initially reveal that only two years separated them, because Mr Haggie had commented she was, of course, much younger than him.
The Brighton couple have been married about 30 years.
They met during a tramp Mr Haggie led in the Maungatua Ranges.
Both had previously been married.
He has seven children and she has three.
Between them, they have 24 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Mr Haggie said he no longer went for tramps but still liked to go for walks.
Mrs Haggie said the pair had a lovely meal and dessert with family at the Mosgiel RSA and Mr Haggie said it was a "very good place for a do".
