Sergeant Matt Lee, of Dunedin, said police were called to the city's Clyde Hill area at 9.10pm yesterday after a disagreement between two men escalated to one assaulting the other.
A 55-year-old man was driving up the road with his wife in the car when their way was blocked by another vehicle on the street.
His wife got out to talk to the 23-year-old man inside the vehicle and ask him to move; however, the younger man took offence to this, exited his vehicle and pushed the woman.
Her husband then confronted the younger man about pushing his wife, and the 23-year-old then punched him in the head.
This caused the older man to fall backwards to the ground, and the younger man then stomped on his leg — causing an audible ‘‘crack’’.
Hato Hone St John were at the scene and assessed the man.
The 23-year-old fled and inquiries were ongoing to locate him, Sgt Lee said.
