Traffic lights, stop signs, pedestrian crossings and one-way streets tested Dunedin's youngest drivers at the weekend.

About 30 children aged between 3 and 7 pedalled custom cars around a miniature track as part of a nationwide safety initiative.

The Peugeot Kids Driving School visited Dunedin for the first time on Saturday morning, teaching youngsters to be aware of traffic signs and what to do when faced with red, green and orange lights.

Peugeot New Zealand general manager Grant Smith was inspired by a similar programme implemented overseas.

The driving school was supported by New Zealand Police, which provided safety tips and road rules.

It was trialled in Auckland at Easter last year and will move to Nelson in a couple of weeks, having been staged in Christchurch last month.

Participants received a driving certificate and took home booklets packed with road safety information.

The event was free, although Peugeot welcomed donations for its associated charity Cure Kids.
