A dozen people used a drop-in centre set up by Aurora Energy during a planned power outage in Andersons Bay, Dunedin, yesterday and the service could be offered again during future planned outages.

The outage, from 9am until 4pm, was to enable the company to undertake upgrades and network maintenance in the Andersons Bay area, to replace two power poles, switchgear and cable terminations.

The power cut affected 769 customers.

The centre operated at the Musselburgh Baptist Church Hall at Musselburgh Rise, where hot drinks were served throughout the day.

Aurora Energy external relations head Gary Johnson acknowledged it was ''inconvenient for customers when their power is off, especially with the colder weather''.

''We will certainly look at the option of drop-in centres in future during the winter months when planned work affects large numbers of customers,'' he said.
