Dunedin apprentice to nationals

Dunedin building apprentice Ryan Keogh (21) will represent the southern region as a contender for the best apprentice of the year at the national construction industry awards in Wellington today.

Mr Keogh has been employed by Naylor Love Construction for the past four years and completed his building apprenticeship in August.

He was named the best building apprentice winner for the southern region last month when he secured the award from Ryan Ambler, of Oamaru, and Cameron Moore, of Central Otago.

Mr Keogh said he was part of a Naylor Love cadetship scheme, which includes studying towards a diploma in construction management at Otago Polytechnic. Since completing his apprenticeship, he has taken on more responsibility and now heads a team of five builders as a foreman "closing in" the final stages of the University of Otago Plaza at Forsyth Barr Stadium.

Mr Keogh will go up against nine other regional finalists from around the country to decide the overall national winner.
