Dunedin bouncer stabbed in neck

An intoxicated teenager allegedly stabbed a bouncer in the neck with a screwdriver after the youth was refused entry into a Dunedin nightclub.

Emergency services were called to the Monkey Bar shortly before midnight on Friday, to find the teenager being restrained by passers-by and security staff outside the Hanover St venue.

The 19-year-old labourer was arrested and appeared in the Dunedin District Court on Saturday, charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. He is expected to reappear again this Friday.

Detective Sergeant Brett Roberts said he spoke to the victim yesterday.

The man had received treatment for a wound to his neck and "if it had been much deeper, it would have been serious".

Anyone who drank and then carried an offensive weapon was a "brainless idiot".

"We are always speaking to people with weapons ... alcohol and weapons do not go together."

People always claim they carried the weapon for self-protection, "but it is no excuse and we will arrest anybody with a weapon in a public place".

Police had talked to people at the scene, and anyone else who may have witnessed the altercation was urged to contact Dunedin police, he said.

There was no CCTV footage of the incident.

Monkey Bar director Benjamin Hanssen said it was fortunate the "very unusual" incident was not serious for the Allied Security doorman.

"It was a relatively minor injury - he was very lucky in that respect."
