He may not have grown old in Dunedin, but a poetry competition in honour of Robbie Burns attracted more than 40 entries on the topic of growing old in the city.

The majority of the national competition's entries were from outside the Dunedin area.

Winner of the published section was Ruth Arnison, of Dunedin; winner of the unpublished section was Peter George, of Dunedin; and winner of the McGonagall section was Sally Brooker, of Oamaru.

They all received a bottle of Grants' whisky, a tartan of Otago rug and an RSA Taieri Pipe Band CD. Mr George also received a medal in memory of Allan Miller.

The event ended in true Scottish style yesterday, with a bite of haggis and a wee dram.
