Dunedin wildlife icon 'Dale' the seal has been found dead on train tracks near St Leonards.

Department of Conservation ranger Jim Fyfe identified Dale by his teeth today.

Dale's body was sighted yesterday afternoon, he died after he wandered onto the tracks and was hit by a train, Mr Fyfe said.

Dale was infamous for disrupting traffic at Andersons Bay and for regularly sunbathing in public places near the Otago Harbour mouth.
