Today, Allan and Hazel Hagan will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary.
Both said there was no secret to staying married and happy for so long.
Mrs Hagan (86), nee Hallum, spent her childhood at Mt Durden, above Waikouaiti. It was during this time that she met her future husband.
Mr Hagan (89) grew up on the family farm at Flag Swamp.
The couple got together after World War 2, when Mr Hagan returned from two years' service with the New Zealand Infantry in Italy.
They were married in the Waikouaiti Presbyterian Church, up the road from where they now live.
They lived on the Hagan family farm at Flag Swamp, and retired to Waikouaiti more than 20 years ago.
They said they enjoyed Waikouaiti, with its closeness to Dunedin and good climate.
As to the secret of a successful marriage, Mrs Hagan said it was just a case of getting on with each other, and enjoying life.
‘‘She wins all the arguments,'' he said. Mrs Hagan said the Hagan men all had a great love of rugby, which she personally could not stand, but she put up with it.
The couple had a family celebration on Sunday, with the newest family addition, a day-old great grandchild in attendance.
