Otago Farmer's Market will go ahead in Dunedin this weekend, but with strict social distancing measures in place, following the Covid-19 outbreak’s arrival to Dunedin.

General manager Kate Vercoe said tables and chairs will be removed, there will be no buskers or tastings and families are being encouraged to send only one family to shop.

Shoppers are being asked to keep a distance when queuing and to act responsibly to reduce risk, she said.

‘‘Local and healthy food distributions networks are really important to maintain at this time,’’ she said.

The decision to go ahead was made as the Otago Farmers Market Trust considered the market "an essential service."

Volunteer trustees will ensure the number of attendees is limited and encourage people to move through the market maintaining social distance.

Some vendors will not attend, which means the distance between vendors can be increased.

Vendors have also been advised to use extra sanitation and have, where possible, a separate worker to handle cash, who will not handle product.

‘‘Look after yourself and each other. . . it may be that you can offer to shop at the market for a neighbour or friend who is unable to attend,’’ Ms Vercoe said.

Health guidance surrounding Covid-19 is constantly changing and the market will keep the public updated on their website, social media and newsletter, she said.
