Dunedin firefighters emerge from a smoke-filled potato chip storage facility yesterday morning.

Four fire appliances and a turntable ladder truck were called to a blaze at a Bluebird potato chip warehouse in Kaikorai Valley just before 8am.

The Goodman Fielder building in Donald St is leased by Pepsico for storing Bluebird products.

A fire officer at the scene said the fire was small, but dense smoke was making things difficult for firefighters.

Asked what flavour he thought was behind the fire's pungent smell, another fire officer said "well, it's barbecue now".

A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman said the fire was brought under control by 9am. It was thought to have been caused by an electrical fault.
