Four fire appliances and a ladder truck have been called out to a blaze at a Bluebird potato chip storage facility in Kaikorai Valley this morning.
Crews were called just before 8am to the Meadow Fresh foods building in Donald St, leased by Pepsico for storing Bluebird products.
A fire officer at the scene told the Otago Daily Times it was a small fire inside the building, but dense smoke was making things difficult for firefighters.
Asked what flavour he thought was behind the fire's pungent smell, a senior fire officer on scene said ''well it's barbecue now''.
A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman said the fire was under control. It was thought to have been called by an electrical fault, he said.
