The Ministry of Education is transforming Dunedin's former Calton Hill School site into a $4million sensory resource hub for special needs education staff.

The school became a campus of Carisbrook School (Carisbrook Heights) in 2011, following the merger between Caversham, College Street and Calton Hill Schools.

However, the campus was closed in December 2016 because of declining rolls.

Ministry of Education infrastructure service head Kim Shannon said part of the Riselaw Rd site was being refurbished into a sensory hub, which would house the administrative functions for the local Resource Teacher Learning and Behaviour (RTLB) unit, the Blind and Low Vision Education Network New Zealand, and the Van Asch Deaf Education Centre.

Southern Regional Health School pupils would also use the site, she said.

"Alongside this redevelopment, a playcentre is also currently operating, and will continue to operate on the site.

"No decisions have yet been made on the remainder of the site; however, if areas of the site are not required ... then they will be disposed of via the Crown's standard process."

The project was expected to be finished early-to-mid 2020.
