DCC senior project manager transport Susil Gunathilake said the fountain had always been part of the plan for Bath St improvements and was designed to be dog-friendly as well as people-friendly.
"It’s made from surplus materials left over from other DCC projects, and includes a drinking fountain, bottle filler and a dog bowl," he said.
"It’s also designed to be accessible by people in wheelchairs."
The fountain was installed a week ago and has been in use since Monday.
