Gales and snow on their way

The MetService is warning of gale-force winds and snow to low levels in parts of Otago and Southland tomorrow as a narrow ridge covers the country.

An intense low is expected to move east, just south of the South Island later today and tomorrow morning.

As it moves past, winds could rise to gale force over parts of the South Island.

Particularly strong and possibly damaging winds are expected in the Clutha area, south of Fiordland and Southland, and over Stewart Island.

As the low passes tomorrow morning, the flow is expected to tend to a cold southwesterly, with snow likely to low levels about the far south and Clutha.

Dunedin can expect some snow flurries about the hill suburbs, and strong winds in exposed parts of Otago Peninsula, but will be largely unscathed by the front.

The southwest flow is expected to ease on Thursday, giving way to a ridge of high pressure on Friday.

The MetService said forecasters would continue to monitor the situation, and people in the affected areas should be cautious and to keep up to date with the latest forecasts and warnings.
