A gaggle of geese blocked a main motorway out of Dunedin this morning and were attacking cars as they drove past.
The mother, father and 10 baby geese laid claim to State Highway 1 at Fairfield and vigorously defended it from oncoming cars, Senior Sergeant Craig Brown said.
The male goose was especially aggressive towards the vehicles.
Police arrived at about 9.30am and corralled them to the side of the road, allowing traffic to move freely again.
They were now sitting on a fence next to the motorway, Mr Brown said.
SPCA staff were on their way to get them out of harm's way.
It was thought they came from a swampy area in the suburb of Green Island, which is close to the motorway.
