Vehicles were packed into the city’s main shopping street, near the intersection with London, Pitt and Frederick Sts, yesterday.
Work is to start further down George St today to replace underground pipes as part of a broader revamp.
The block between Moray Pl and St Andrew St will be worked on first, and a detour will be in place while it is in progress. It is expected to be completed in October.
When the revamp of George St is completed, traffic will flow one way for three blocks, between the intersections with Frederick St and Moray Pl.
The area will have a pedestrian focus. Two-way traffic will continue north of Frederick St, from the Knox block.
The overall upgrade of George St and nearby streets in the central city is due to be completed in 2024.
