'Good catch' by upgraded stadium security

New security at Dunedin's Forsyth Barr Stadium helped catch a 19-year-old man allegedly stealing from a portable building just before midnight on Saturday.

A security guard called police and watched the man collect cigarettes, a chocolate bar and a bottle of strawberry milk from inside the cafe, Senior Sergeant Steve Aitken said yesterday.

The cafe was for stadium contractors but it was not inside the building site.

The man did not enter the building site, but he was close enough to be caught by stadium security, Snr Sgt Aitken said.

"We have to say this is a really good catch for the upgraded security at the stadium."

Security was tightened after a series of bizarre intruder incidents in one night at the start of the month saw an 85 tonne crane driven more than 20m from where it was left, and a scissor lift crane damaged.

Police continue to investigate those incidents.

• A Dunedin man was charged with burglary after allegedly entering the Pak'n Save supermarket on Hillside Rd after it was closed on Saturday night.

Senior Sergeant Brian Benn said the abusive man was restrained by a member of the public until police arrived about 11.30pm.

• A dinghy found washed up on a beach at Karitane prompted police checks and requests for information to be broadcast on Maritime Radio.

A woman found the 3m long, white and maroon dinghy on the beach near Parata St just after 8am yesterday, Senior Sergeant Brian Benn, of Dunedin, said.

The boat had been damaged and pieces of wood likely from the boat had washed up elsewhere on the beach.

Anyone who knew more about the boat should contact police, Snr Sgt Benn said.

• A 28-year-old Oamaru man was arrested following a domestic incident yesterday.

Senior Sergeant Steve Aitken said the man rammed his partner's car with his vehicle before leaving with a rifle in his car, about 2am.

He was arrested three hours later when he returned to the house.

The Dunedin Armed Offenders Squad was called out, but stood down before it arrived in Oamaru.
