Prof John Barclay, Lightfoot Professor of Divinity at Durham University, England, spoke about the Apostle Paul as a subversive thinker in the ancient world.
Prof Barclay has been visiting Otago University as a de Carle Lecturer.
The de Carle Lectures result from a generous bequest to Otago University in 1946, from Miss Edith Isabelle de Carle, of Dunedin.
The bequest is used to bring distinguished scholars in the humanities to the university for periods of between two and six months, during which they also give a short series of open lectures.
Lady Satyanand is a relative of the de Carle family.
Other relatives also gathered in Dunedin yesterday, from elsewhere in New Zealand.
After the first lecture, the vice-chancellor, Prof Sir David Skegg, hosted a dinner for Their Excellencies and other guests, to celebrate the memory of Miss de Carle.
Sir Anand and Lady Satyanand will also attend Prof Barclay's second de Carle lecture, also focusing on the Apostle Paul, at the Archway 1 lecture theatre at 5.10pm today.
