The welding of a railway line triggered a grass fire, forcing the partial closure of State Highway One near Henley this afternoon.

A Fire spokesman said two fire appliances and a water tanker from the nearby Dunedin International Airport were in attendance.

SH1 was briefly closed for a time, but one lane has been reopened.

The fire was sparked by track welding on the adjacent railway line, he said.
