Well-groomed and well-behaved little animals assembled for a show in Green Island, Dunedin, and they appeared to be unfazed by the occasion.

Part of the point was the guinea pigs there were also well bred and distinctive.

They looked in healthy condition and their various colours — ginger, white and black — and different lengths of hair had been coiffed meticulously for yesterday’s show.

Otago Cavy Club president Josh Wilson-Jones, 16, said about 100 guinea pigs were taken to the winter championship show at the Green Island Civic Hall.

They were mainly from Otago, but some had come from other parts of the South Island.

Josh, of Timaru, said cavy was the scientific name for guinea pig and the show had various elements.

This included entries for members and novices, novelty classes and "winter stargazing" fancy dress.

A pet show was on yesterday morning and Josh said purebreds would then be on show.

There was also a Matariki and point show, Josh said.

Show judge Jen Ballin had come from Queensland, Australia, for the event.

The event featured a guinea pig cuddle corner, cavies up for adoption and nail clipping and parasite treatment.

There were also guinea pig-themed arts and crafts.
