Getting into the Halloween spirit has become an annual affair for the Knopp family.

A party hosted by Chris Knopp, Kirsteen McLay-Knopp and their five children was attended by 40 others at their home in St Kilda on Saturday.

Each year, the family decorated their home and this year's theme was Ancient Egypt.

The family were joined by some of Dunedin's Syrian community, whom Mrs McLay-Knopp had met during her time volunteering for the Red Cross.

Mrs McLay Knopp said the party, which had been a yearly event since 2004, was a chance for her family to catch up with others in the community and create a safe place where children could come together.

"I don't love the idea of trick or treating, so to have something at a house where you can keep an eye on the kids is better than going out.

"I think it's a positive way ... to get lots of different people from the community together.''

Another party will be held on Thursday night.
