Dunedin Public Art Gallery preparator Russell Soo lines up 240 paua shells yesterday during the installation of the 1991 work Pathway to the Sea - Aramoana by artists Ralph Hotere and Bill Culbert.

The work has been loaned to the gallery by Te Papa to mark Hotere's 80th birthday next Thursday.

It will be the first time it has been exhibited in Dunedin since 2000.

The installation is complemented by a series of drawings and lithographs which Hotere and Culbert created during the conceptualisation of the work.

Pathway to the Sea - Aramoana will be opened to the public on Saturday and will be on display at the DPAG until November 20.
