Former Danish royal yacht MY Galerna is in dry dock for maintenance at the Birch St wharf in Dunedin.

The yacht, built for the Danish royal family in 1973, once hosted surrealist artist Salvador Dali.

Now, it can be hired for $5000 a day.

Owner Alisdair Cassels, of Christchurch, said charter work had "dried up a little bit" with the recession, but there was still demand.

Most clients were from the United States.

Last year, an American couple hired the yacht for a month-long cruise, he said.

The yacht is due to leave port tomorrow night.
