Highlanders first five-eighth Robbie Robinson faces disciplinary action from the franchise after he spent time in a police cell yesterday morning.

Robinson (21), who hours earlier had come off the bench to play for the Highlanders in their 44-13 loss to the Crusaders at Carisbrook, was pepper-sprayed by police, arrested and put in a police cell after an incident in central Dunedin early yesterday.

He was released later in the morning and was not charged.

Highlanders general manager Roger Clark said Robinson was walking home when he got into a scuffle with another male.

Both men were pepper-sprayed by police and taken to police cells, he said.

The duo were in the cells for a couple of hours before both were released by police, with no charges, yesterday morning, he said.

Highlanders general manager Roger Clark said Robinson was very disappointed with his actions and realised he had let himself and the team down.

"But we set high standards right across the organisation and this sort of behaviour is not acceptable," Clark said.

"These kids are in a privileged position and have to act responsibly no matter what happens."

He said the Highlanders were disappointed with the incident and appropriate action would be taken.

He would not reveal what that action would be, though it would be obvious to everyone what it would be, he said.

The discipline is likely to be Robinson's being dropped for at least a game.

Clark said there were set protocols to follow but players were not banned from drinking alcohol.

Although Clark did not want to defend Robinson's actions, he said the player had endured a big week.

Robinson had flown back from South Africa and attended the funeral of Michael Saunders, the father of his partner and Southern Steel netballer Hayley Saunders and his teammate, Matt Saunders.
