Historic aircraft taking passengers

A historic local aircraft found a gap in the blustery weather to take to the skies yesterday after wild winds kept it grounded on Saturday.

The de Havilland Dominie aircraft, which once flew regularly between Dunedin and Invercargill, was available to the public for paid flights at Taieri Airfield yesterday.

The eight-seater aircraft made six flights from 8am, taking 38 passengers from Taieri over the harbour and central Dunedin.

Forecast strong winds grounded the aircraft mid-morning, Croydon Aviation Heritage Trust quality assurance manager and training pilot Phil Kean said.

If there was demand, $100 rides would be offered this week, Mr Kean said.

The Otago Daily Times on Saturday incorrectly reported the flights were free.
