Holiday season stress blamed for violence spike

Dunedin police have noted a rise in the number of domestic violence incidents and say the "annual occurrence" can be attributed to an increase in the number of people reaching for the bottle, alongside stress associated with the holiday season.

Senior Sergeant Steve Aitken said Dunedin police responded to four domestic violence callouts on Monday night.

Alcohol was cited as a main contributor to domestic violence incidents during the season, as people were more likely to overindulge during the holidays.

"We've had a steady number of about two or three a day, which is up from the more usual single incidents," he said.

However, Snr Sgt Aitken said the increase in domestic violence was "nothing out of the ordinary" during the summer holiday season.
