A contemporary but classic design has won Wains Hotel one of the top prizes in the 2019 Dulux Colour Awards.

Described as a grand old dame with quirks and personality, the Princes St building is undergoing a $7 million refurbishment and is expected to be completed by the end of this year.

The judges said the New Zealand grand prix winner used colour in an elegant and refined way.

The design by Auckland studio Yellow6 was contemporary but still in keeping with the hotel's Victorian-era heritage.

"The subtle use of colour blocking, with soft greys and neutrals on walls to enhance the traditional mouldings, is especially worth noting, as is the choice of Dulux Tuatapere from the colours of New Zealand range for the feature wall - a nod to the South Island. Even the clear delineation of curtain lines to define the colour blocks is clever."

This year's awards attracted a record 435 entries from across New Zealand and Australia.
