Icy road conditions expected today

Grit trucks were on standby last night as severe frosts were forecast so soon after Monday's snow and rain.

About 4cm-5cm of snow fell on the hills around Dunedin on Monday night, requiring roads at Mt Cargill and George King Memorial Dr, from Outram to Hindon, to be cleared.

Dunedin City Council roading maintenance engineer Peter Standring said both areas were cleared by mid-morning and other roads around the city were gritted.

The MetService was predicting icy road conditions today and tomorrow, when a milder west to northwest flow was forecast to develop.

"Motorists are urged to take particular care and be prepared for ice," a special weather advisory said.

Mr Standring said a contractor was patrolling roads last night and calcium magnesium acetate was spread on the main at-risk roads.

Some roads would be pre-gritted in rural areas, and others would be gritted this morning as needed.

So far this winter, Dunedin had experienced only about half of the 36 frost days recorded last winter.
