A Fulton Hogan employee was injured when the "sucker truck'' he was driving rolled on State Highway 1, between Waihola and Milton, yesterday.

Milton Volunteer Fire Brigade Chief Fire Officer Robbie Philip said the incident happened about 2km northeast of Milburn, just before noon.

When firefighters arrived, the truck was resting on its side in the middle of the highway and the driver was out of the vehicle.

St John spokesman Gerard Campbell said that the driver suffered moderate injuries
and was taken by ambulance
to Dunedin Hospital.

Mr Philip said fuel was leaking from the truck and firefighters cleaned the area to ensure fuel remained out of any waterways.

A police spokeswoman said one lane on the highway opened before 1pm and both lanes were open just after 4pm.

The truck was lifted by a 55-tonne crane then taken away by another truck, he said.

Fulton Hogan regional manager Grant Sime said he did not know why the vehicle rolled.

The driver had not been spoken to about the crash, as the ``key'' focus had been on his recovery, he said.
