Sadly, Glad Barnes could not find anyone to accompany her to tonight's Neil Diamond concert in Dunedin.

But the 83-year-old Alexandra woman says this is not one of those sad songs sung blue.

It's OK, because her gold ticket was upgraded to a diamond ticket yesterday, so she will now be within a gem's throw of the stage where she will have an uninterrupted night out with her favourite pop star.

''I'm going to feel like the Queen of Diamonds. I can't believe this is happening to me.''

Mrs Barnes said this was the first time she had been to a Neil Diamond concert, and she was not going to let a minor detail (like not having someone to go with) get in the way of her attendance.

''I've waited my whole life for this. I think I'm his biggest fan.

''I've got just about all his LPs, tapes, videos, CDs and his DVDs.

''I was determined I was going to see him this time, because I might never get the chance again at my age. He's a very special person.''

Neil Diamond's songs touched her, because they came ''right from his heart'', she said.

''They all mean a lot to him and, over the years, they've meant a lot to me as well. I've played him a lot, especially at nighttimes.''

The Grammy Award-winning rock and pop singer/songwriter and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member is performing at Forsyth Barr Stadium at 7.45pm as part of his 2015 world tour.

His concert is expected to feature songs from his latest studio album Melody Road, as well as a long list of hits spanning many decades, including Cherry Cherry, Holly Holy, Cracklin' Rosie, Song Sung Blue, You Don't Bring Me Flowers, Solitary Man, Sweet Caroline, Love on the Rocks, Desiree and Shilo.

Mrs Barnes said if she could say one thing to Neil Diamond, it would be: ''Thank you for coming. I think we're so lucky to have him come here.''
