Kiwi touch to celebrate music month

With lyrics like "Kiwi can-do", "a pinch of silver fern" and "some aroha", the song Made in New Zealand will add an unmistakable Kiwi atmosphere to New Zealand Music Month celebrations in the Octagon on Monday.

The low-key rock ballad will be sung by pupils from Balmacewen, Tahuna and Dunedin North Intermediates, and Dunedin Mayor Peter Chin will be there to lend a voice - all accompanied by University of Otago Rock Music Programme students Olivia Canny, Kaine Harington and Jamie MacDonald.

They will be among thousands who will sing the song simultaneously at noon on Monday around New Zealand.

The song was written by Gisborne Girls' High School pupils Katherine Muir, Nikki Taylor, Amber Le Compte and Stevii Hill and won the 2010 Song of New Zealand Music Month competition.

The event is intended to remind Kiwis of the importance of music in everyday life.
