'Let's get married' . . . and they finally did

It has been something of a family joke over the years.

Several times a year, for the past 15 years, Glen Tily (47) has got on bended knee and proposed marriage to the love of his life, Cathryn Herd (53).

And every time, she has politely fobbed him off.

''It is a joke. Every party we go to, he asks me to marry him.''

But she turned the tables on him on Saturday night.

She proposed to him in front of about 150 people at a function in the Southern Rugby Football Club in South Dunedin.

And, not surprisingly, he responded with an emphatic ''yes''.

The biggest surprise came when a few friends in the know brought appropriate attire so the couple could dress up, and within minutes of the proposal, they were standing in front of a celebrant who had been standing inconspicuously in the corner _ and they tied the knot.

Mrs Herd Tily said she changed her mind about marriage for sentimental reasons.

''Things have happened recently. As you get older, you kind of realise that companionship and love is important.

''I work at the hospital and you see people every day and how sick they are; and just how people don't have people visiting. It's very sad.

''It makes you become a bit more aware of things like that. At the end of the day you may not have anybody. It was a home truth.''

She recently attended a funeral where a husband lost his wife of 50 years.

''They had been together since they were 16. I thought that was absolutely wonderful.

''It was something that touched me. It was really nice to have that feeling, and I thought, well you know, after 20 years it's about time we did it.''

Mrs Herd Tily said she had been planning the event for months, and Mr Tily said he got ''a hell of a surprise'' when she popped the question on Saturday.

He said he suspected something was up when he arrived at the club and saw a few ''professional looking'' people he didn't recognise, such as the Otago Daily Times photographer.

''I'd seen the wedding celebrant before, but I wondered why he was there. I didn't invite him.''

Mr Tily said the wedding had made his year.

''I've been wanting this for a long time. I've had a smile on my face ever since.''

At the end of the night, Mrs Herd Tily said her new husband failed to carry her across the threshold.

''We're both too old for that,'' she said with a chuckle.

''He just bought me a beer and said 'good luck'.''

The Dunedin couple are planning a honeymoon to Melbourne and the Gold Coast later this year.
