New traffic lights on Andersons Bay Rd will be closely monitored by the Dunedin City Council to ensure vehicles flow smoothly through them.

The lights were installed as part of the resource consent for the new Countdown Dunedin South supermarket and began operating recently.

Dunedin City Council senior traffic engineer Ron Minnema said there was "no concern" about the lights causing traffic to bank up, either on the road or at businesses, because they were "linked" with others.

Instructions were given during the consent process to ensure traffic exiting the supermarket car park to the north would have sufficient space to move into, and that traffic turning into the car park would not intrude into the Hillside Rd intersection.

The traffic signal system was designed to create queues which constantly dispersed. If queues formed and took long periods to move, the system was not working properly.

Council staff visited the site yesterday afternoon and would return again today and tomorrow and possibly next week to monitor how the lights were working and establish what demand there was for accessing and exiting Countdown.

"There will be a little bit of fine-tuning at the site. It's a very busy corridor and we have to get it right," Mr Minnema said.

"People will have to get used to how everything works, as well. They need to be aware and it will just take a little bit of time to settle down."
