Little drummer boy aspires to greater things

Jamie Hall has his finger on the pulse of where the money is in Dunedin.

It is Christmas time and there are loads of cash-carrying shoppers flitting about the city's stores looking for presents, and the 11-year-old is trying to relieve many of them of their loose change.

He has spent the past couple of weeks busking in out-of-the-way areas in the CBD, with half a dozen old plastic buckets, some paint tins and a set of drum sticks - playing them like drums, to his favourite Christmas music on a portable CD player.

His novel approach to busking has so far raised about $200, and he hopes to raise at least $1000 so he can buy himself a real, top-of-the-line, drum kit.

When his parents told him they could not afford to buy him a drum kit, it was not because they were less than enthusiastic about his growing passion for the noisy hobby.

It was just that $1000 was a lot of money, his mother, Nikki, said.

Not dissuaded by the lack of funding, Jamie decided to take the matter into his own hands - quite literally - and raise his own money for the drum kit.

``I just like playing drums.

``My favourite drummer is the guy from Twenty One Pilots [Josh Dun].

``He's just a really cool player.''

Jamie takes lessons every Friday, and Mrs Hall said he loved it because it was the only time he actually got to play on a real drum kit.

At home, he uses the buckets to practise. So he is looking forward to the day when he can rehearse at home on a real drum kit.

``He loves his drum lessons.

``But I have to keep telling him not to practise too early in the morning, because the neighbours won't like it.''
